User guide

Practical steps for keeping your household supplies up to date. Some features are optional; screen labels may vary by app version.

In this guide

1. Start without setup

On the welcome screen, tap Continue to app. You can add an item, import a backup or set up backups later. Local inventory does not require a separate app account.

2. Add and organize items

Open Items and tap +. Enter the product name, inventory unit and initial quantity. Set a minimum to identify low stock. Categories, locations, photos and dates are optional. Choose the starting unit carefully: it stays fixed once inventory history exists.

3. Record usage, purchases and counts

Open an item to record usage or restock. Check the quantity, unit and location before confirming. If the item ran out without every use being recorded, use the ran-out action and review a count of zero. A physical count corrects stock without inventing consumption history.

4. Use compatible units

An item keeps its original inventory unit. For example, rice created in pounds remains in pounds when a later kilogram purchase is converted. Weight converts to compatible weight, and volume to compatible volume. Unqualified cups, fluid ounces, pints, quarts and gallons use US measures. Pieces cannot automatically convert to pounds, and volume cannot convert to weight without product-specific information.

5. Speak, review and confirm

Open Voice entry from Home. Choose Use or Bought. With the default Hold to talk control, hold the microphone, wait for Listening, say the amount, unit and product, then release. For example: “one pound of rice.” Review the recognized text and proposed items, correct anything misunderstood and confirm the final review to save. Add successive items and use Done to finish collecting. An unmatched product needs its name, unit and quantity reviewed in the new-item flow. Type instead is available when speech is unavailable or misunderstood. Settings → Voice controls the interaction, sounds and speech preferences. Speech stays on device; availability depends on permissions and installed Apple resources.

6. Use the shopping list and favorites

Open Shopping to see suggested low-stock items and add other entries. Buying something still needs a confirmed restock to update inventory. Pin favorites for quick access and review their suggested usual amounts before saving a repeated use or purchase.

7. Track dates, batches and opened products

Add expiration or replacement dates when useful. Enable local reminders and allow notification permission to receive alerts. Purchase batches and opened-product tracking are optional per item. Batches help separate purchases with different dates; opened tracking records an opening date and can use a chosen reminder period. Stock changes still need their own confirmation.

8. Try barcode and receipt scanning

Barcode Beta is optional in Settings. Local scanning can remember codes linked to your items. Online lookup is a separate opt-in: explicitly looking up an unknown code contacts Open Food Facts. Verify names, package amounts and units before saving. Receipt scanning reads text locally; review extracted purchase lines and confirm. A scan alone does not record a purchase. Temporary receipt images may remain in the device cache.

9. Back up and restore

Use Backup & Import to create or restore a backup and configure supported automatic backups. Full backups include managed photos and documents. Keep the password for encrypted backups: it cannot be recovered. CSV exports are not encrypted. Review a restore carefully because it replaces local inventory. Existing backup files are not deleted by clearing household data.

10. Understand household sync

Manage Sync household under More → Households. Local changes save first; enabled sync uses your Apple Account and needs a connection. Photos and documents do not sync with household records. Different-account household sharing is still being completed and needs device validation. Keep backups, and resolve connection or account-change warnings before relying on synchronization.

11. Permissions, privacy and deletion

Manage microphone, speech, camera, photo and notification permissions in iOS Settings as needed. App Settings includes language and optional feature controls. Clear household data has distinct device-only and shared choices; device-only clearing leaves cloud data and other devices intact. Shared clearing requires an owner and connected household. Original library images, other households and existing backup/export files remain. Read the privacy policy for retention and recovery limits.

12. If something does not work

For speech, check permissions, language and local-resource availability; retry or type the entry. For a scan, improve lighting or enter the code manually. If a save reports a cleanup or recovery warning, read it before repeating the action: inventory may already be saved. For sync, check the account and connection and preserve a backup before recovery.
